Sometimes when we have got to say something, to make someone feel better, the words don't always come right. It's ok to have such moments in life. There's no one who doesn't make any mistake. The point is that there are moments when we sort of do silly mistakes, falter in a way. But we have to get past these things. I know how you felt, as my boss in previous company used to take his work dead seriously, more than necessary, and he used to make a face of great depression when we didn't give him good results. It's okay to have a passion for work, but excess in everything is bad. I think it's really nice what you wanted to tell her. To not leave a dream for anything.. it's actually kinda sweet. You are really nice. That's something not many people have, and you should be proud of it. :)

i have to agree on this one... same story as mine (only around 3-4 years earlier, haha)... amazingly, sticking to standards doesn't constrain me too much (if you get used to the amazing xhtml/css hacks to make your pages look similar across all major browsers)...

the sad part is, if you would start working for the corporate environment, they care more on the functionality... not the standards... they use frameworks (jquery, extjs, dojo) instead of designing/developing every single piece of code... they're targeting rapid application development to meet the clients demands as soon as possible... of course, for the company to get money... but as a developer, even if i shout out that sticking to the standards is also important -- no one would care (well maybe your officemates will care -- will even ask you to teach them about the standards)...

this is the reason why i'm deviating from web design to web development... i'm into creating my own php and javascript libraries to further speed up my development -- and also uniforming my code... once it's stable, at least, you'll have more time to think on the user interface and making it standards-compliant (without sacrificing the needed time)...
